Indeed the correspondence principle was proposed originally to ensure that the development of quantum mechanics produced results that asymptotically approached the predictions of classical physics on large-mass scales. It has led to a number of surprising results in the application of thermodynamic concepts to small systems, with many contributions by workers in statistical mechanics.
